background:

So here are the basics. Cybertronians are space alien mechanical beings. They have two forms (bipedal and vehicle/whatever mode), and can be forged or cold constructed. Forged sparks(souls) are harvested and 'nurtured' from a base substance surrounding them known as sentio metallico, while Cold-Constructed sparks are given pre-fabricated bodies. They also live a long ass time if they aren't killed - in the millions of years. They spend most of their time murdering each other in colorful ways.

Pre War

Cybertronians (unsurprisingly) come from the planet of Cybertron, a metallic world with mysterious origins and the ability to generate sparks, the life force of all Cybertronians, and energon, their primary fuel source. After passing hands through several Primes(basically the space emperor of the planet), Cybertron and its moon became ruled by a self-serving Senate that used 'functionism' as a way of keeping the population in line.

The latter is a belief that a Cybertronian's lot in life was solely determined by the usefulness of their alt mode. The result was a rigid caste system. If you turned into a proton microscope, congratulations! If you were a drill, then enjoy your life-long career in the energon mines of Luna 2! The Autobots at the time were the Senate's security force on Iacon.

Wartime

The Decepticon movement, led by Megatron and a galvanized army of low-caste workers, gained momentum and eventually staged an uprising which resulted in the murder of Sentinel Prime and the entire Senate. However, rather than stop there, things worsened and became more violent until it was all out war between the Decepticons and Autobots - now led by Optimus Prime.

While peace talks failed, the Tyrest Accord was agreed on by both sides, which prohibited the trade of Cybertronian tech to other alien races regardless of their faction.

Maximus is warborn, meaning he was forged after the fighting broke out. He most likely underwent something akin to the 10-step educational program used for cold-constructed MTOs, which focused mostly on things like weapon competence and overall combat readiness while shirking all them Robot Culture & Social Studies classes.

His claim to fame came at Simanzi, where he became well-known for the copious amount of Decepticons he'd killed during the course of the campaign. The event in its totality was one of the most violent of the entire war, where the total Cybertronian population was halved, the southern hemisphere of the planet became superheated from the intensity of the fighting, and the Decepticons nearly achieved victory. It is also known as the Simanzi Massacre for the widespread death and destruction wrought on both sides.

Eventually, their fighting took to the stars and became a plague on other worlds. (Naturally, they were blacklisted by the Galactic Council because who wants to deal with that shit?)

Maximus then became the warden of the Autobot-run maximum security prison known as Garrus 9, where Autobot and Decepticon alike were brought when they violated agreed upon military law. Oftentimes he and his security forces would need to defend the base from Decepticon attack, but it was considered safe and stable enough to hold the sensitive data from the Aequitas trials and other technological secrets.

Eventually, it was overrun when the rogue phase-sixer Overlord joined Decepticon forces in assaulting the prison (important to note here that phase sixers were basically built to decimate an entire planet's population. SHIT GOT REAL). Overlord had his own plans for G-9 and turned it into a giant Colosseum for his own personal, gory entertainment. Under his rule, he tossed Maximus to his former prisoners to be torn apart, then personally tortured him, and eventually left him a blinded, limbless, barely-living lockpick plugged in to the Aequitas judgment machine/supercomputer.

Years later, his body was recovered when the Wreckers infiltrated the prison and defeated Overlord, and he was left comatose in the Delphi medical outpost on Messatine.

Post-War

While he was in a coma, Autobot and Decepticon alike returned back to a revitalized Cybertron after the War had finally ended after 4 million years of bloody conflict. A neutral population angry to find their homeworld burned clean of its cities prompted Optimus Prime to leave the planet to pacify them. There was a schism among the Autobots, where 200 of them went on the Lost Light to find their long lost ancestors, while the remaining forces stayied behind trying to rebuild.

The Lost Light (captained by Rodimus) traveled the stars, eventually making its way to Delphi, where Ratchet, Drift, and Pipes began to investigate a plague unknowingly engineered by the Autobot medic Pharma. Part of his plan was using two bribed Decepticons to attack Ratchet & co, which resulted in Fortress Maximus being revitalized using a previously untested 'spark jump' method. He then proceeded to tear apart the Decepticons so viciously that he was placed in compulsory sessions with Rung, the ship's therapist, after the whole plague business was dealt with.

Despite the sessions, he began to have trouble dealing with his trauma on Garrus-9. It eventually reached a breaking point that resulted in him having a mental breakdown and going on a shooting spree, attacking anyone that reminded him of Overlord. He then took Rung and Whirl as hostages to try and force the Lost Light to turn around back to Cybertron. His attempt eventually failed when footage from G9 was used to distract him and he was impaled by Whirl. He later recovered and was put in the brig.

Some weeks later, Maximus was released from the brig when Overlord, having escaped a slow-cell that had been secretly attached to the ship, was mid-murderous rampage. With the phase-sixer temporarily stunned by a word-trigger implanted in his mind by Chromedome, Maximus was able to force him back into the slow cell via very eager punching. This allowed Chromedome an opportunity to launch Overlord's cell into deep space and also blow it up for good measure.

Shortly after, Rodimus led the Lost Light to Luna 1, Cybertron's missing moon, and command for the ship was given to Maximus after a ground team went to investigate weird shit going down. Eventually, they discover that Chief Justice Tyrest, the guy responsible for all the combat agreements between the two factions (the Tyrest Accord), has gone full fruitloop. He now believes that all cold-constructed robots are inherently sinful and that killing them all will open up a portal to robot heaven.

Fortunately, Rodimus & friends stop Tyrest's plan, though they had to destroy a piece of the Matrix in order to do so. Maximus is then commended for his role in defending the Lost Light by Rodimus and is offered the position of Duly Appointed enforcer of the Tyrest Accord. Although apprehensive, he accepts the role after some encouragement. He stays with Red Alert and the Circle of Light on Luna 1, looking after Tyrest's body.

personality:

A lot of Maximus' personality was shaped by his environment and by necessity. He can be fiercely loyal and selfless, but can also be stubborn, cold-blooded and unexpressive. His dedication is quite extreme; even after being tortured and left barely alive at Garrus 9, he refused to give his captors the codes to the Aequitas database and it remained unbreached until the Wreckers arrived. At his core, he's a survivor, with the fortitude(heh) to keep going even after everything tanks seven miles deep into to hell.

He has a very practical mindset when following a clear task or mission to accomplish, and will go to to whatever lengths necessary to complete it. Even if the methods used aren't the most savory. Harsh decisions that result in deaths or worse were just a part of life, and sometimes he needed things to get ugly before they can get better. Despite being an Autobot, he is just as capable of swift and decisive ruthlessness should the situation come to that (see: freeing the prisoner Arcee to use her to track down escapees, but keeping her spark tagged with a device that could crush her spark if she got out of line. Not to mention the spark extraction methods used in G9.). That said, he's not sadistic, but will not hesitate to resort to more extreme methods should they be necessary.

Maximus also has a strong sense of what he thinks is right and wrong, which is based more on intuition than any written set of rules, but can also be incredibly vindictive. Part of his motivation for taking hostages on the Lost Light was to try and achieve some sort of justice by striking back at Autobot High Command for what he felt was abandonment and being unable to exact vengeance on Overlord himself. He eventually realizes this was misguided, but was (understandably) caught up in a cocktail of emotions after his trauma at Garrus-9. While he's managed to start to find some closure, the whole event still very much haunts him and is best to tread carefully or avoid altogether. He's quite experienced at handling all manner of outside threats, but is quite vulnerable to internal turmoil.

It's no surprise to say Maximus isn't the most well-adjusted individual when it comes to social manners outside something resembling a command structure. To strangers, he is generally straightforward but can come off as irritable and hard-edged. Maximus doesn't particularly care about pleasing people around him. He won't be attempting to entertain or connect with someone if he doesn't like or respect them. It takes some persistence to get him to open up at all, and he's not particularly talkative to begin with.

However, he does have softer edges when it comes to people he cares about. Shy might be the wrong word here, but he can reach a point where he cares enough about the feelings of his close companions to not want to hurt them by being callous, resulting in trying to avoid awkward situations. Rather than personally talking to one of his crewmates in mourning, he had one of their close friends deliver his message for him. He was unsure how to address the situation and didn't want to fuck it up.

When Rung came to visit him in confinement, he'd spent the past couple of weeks trying to mentally draft an appropriate apology for taking him hostage, but in the end tossed it aside after feeling it was more for his own benefit than for Rung's. When it comes to close personal relationships, he is actually quite thoughtful and introspective.

Ultimately, his struggle now is to find a purpose. As a warborn Autobot, his skills are quite focused, and outside of combat there isn't much he has extensive experience with. A world without a clear enemy is a difficult one to adjust to.

In so many words, Fortress Maximus is a recovering warrior trying to find meaning in post-war life.

powers and abilities:
  • Cybertronian: being a giant (around 40') among a race of giant space robots has it's perks - namely being stupidly durable and being proficient at destroying things (usually other robots). Damage to the spark, t-cog, or brain module can be fatal, just as with any other member of his species. His alt mode is a space tank and, for the curious, he does indeed have guns in his legs. Although not tech-focused himself, being part of a mechanical race makes him naturally inclined to be familiar with technology and is built with an internal comm, self-repair systems and such.
  • Wartime Skills & Conditioning: All of them involve robot death in some way. Unarmed combat, firearms training, and combat tactics all come with the package. Max was born and spent most of his life murdering Decepticons in every which way possible- and he's gotten quite good at it.
( GAME INFORMATION )
infinity gem: Reality Gem, definitely. After struggling with inner demons, he's been trying to reconcile with his past and take on new responsibilities (as shown with him choosing to stay on Luna 1 with Red Alert and the Circle).
power: Illusions
housing: man idk 3 or 10 or whichever makes for the strangest bedfellows.
inventory:
  • an obscenely large gun
  • energon rations

log sample:
Fortress Maximus' face is covered by one massive hand, his head pounding with irritation. Disposing of Decepticons and keeping inmates well in line was one thing, but managing hours of attempted diplomacy was a nightmare world all on its own. He barely had the patience to put up with other Cybertronians, let alone the multispecies cocktail on this station. But he'd accepted his role as Duly Appointed Enforcer of the Tyrest Accord, and that meant attempting to spur cooperation with the locals.

With his fingers pressed onto the bridge of his nose, he mentally went over the various points he'd reiterated to the Luminal officer at their headquarters, to the secretary outside the Council's meeting hall, and now the Continuum Cortex Staff(he was almost certain her name was Shala). Security risk of Cybertronian weaponry. Gideon's glue, glass gas, blah blah blah. A law as extensive and obtuse as the Accord was never easy to explain to someone without seeing their attention sap out of them quicker than a new stash of Nightmare Fuel at Swerve's. He was starting to think he'd need a different approach.

The alien is floating fourty feet off the ground, at a respectable distance from his head. His hand slips down and he stares back at her, where it drifts to the clipped weapon at his side.

"I need to speak with your superiors. Now."
